Lesson 1 – What is Entrepreneurship?

Having a basic understanding of what Entrepreneurship is, is vital to your success in this class.  Entrepresneurship is key to a thriving econonomy, and in Saskatchewan,  98.5% of business are that of Small Businesses ran by Entrepreneurs.

Entrepreneurship is one of the keys to job creation in Saskatchewan. Small businesses are defined as those with less than $5 million in annual sales or with fewer than 50 employees. In addition to this

  • Small businesses employ almost 140,000 people, about one-third of Saskatchewan’s labour force.
  • In 2010, there were approximately 95,000 small businesses operating in Saskatchewan.
  • In 2009, small businesses in Saskatchewan contributed an estimated 35% of the province’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which was the highest percentage among the Canadian provinces.

So what is Entrepreneurship? Entrepreneurship is a global concept, one that is understood by all, however interpreted differently by many.  Below are two videos, one is how people in different parts of the world view and define Entrepreneurship, and the second video give you a perspective from Entrepreneurs in Saskatchewan.

The following handout will let you know.  At the end of the handout there will be another page called “What Skills Do You Think You Need”   I want you to brainstorm a list of all of the different skills that YOU think YOU need to have in order to be a succesful Entrepreneur.  You can either print out the paper and list them on their or use word and creat a list their.  Please title the Page – “What Skills do You Need”
